The Tiber is a surprising wildlife corridor.

The Tiber has been an important part of Roman culture and mythology, and has been featured in many works of art, literature, and film.

During this guided hike we will discover its wildlife, flora, fauna and also why the river and the Romans always had a difficult love-hate relationship over the centuries.

Some facts about the Tiber: The Tiber is the third-longest river in Italy, with a total length of approximately 405 kilometers (252 miles). It starts in the Apennine Mountains and flows through the center of Rome before emptying into the Tyrrhenian Sea. During times of low water levels, the river can be quite shallow, while during times of heavy rain and flooding, it can become much deeper. Learn more on this Rome River Tour!

A romantic poets about the Tiber:

William Cullen Bryant (1794–1878), considered one of the most significant poets of early America, had this to say:

“Oh, river! darkling river! what a voice
Is that thou utterest while all else is still
The ancient voice that, centuries ago,
Sounded between thy hills, while Rome was yet
A weedy solitude by Tiber’s stream!”
— William C. Bryant
