The fascinating UNESCO forest in Rome

Hike among 150-year-old beech trees and let their size, energy, and story surprise you! Due to their peculiar location, influenced by volcanic soil, vicinity to a lake, and other factors, they appear to be particularly resilient. They have kept a secret to this day, as scientists are still trying to understand how they managed to survive the glacial period and other events.

A special forest in Rome

The growth of beech trees at these low altitudes is favored by a peculiar microclimate and coolness due to the presence of seven springs that fed the Trajan-Paul aqueduct, frequent rainfall, and moist currents from the neighboring Lake Bracciano. Among centuries-old beech trees “lives” the so-called “Beech of the Pigeon” which grows near the summit of Monte Raschio. The origin of this name derives from the Altieri family’s use of the tree as a lure for pigeons.

A special forest in Rome

Unspoiled nature, accessible by train.

The beech forest of Oriolo Romano is one of only five Italian sites that are recognized as natural heritage on the World Heritage List.

What makes this forest special is that, despite its proximity to inhabited settlements, preserves an unspoiled nature, with the presence of 500-year-old trees (e.g. hornbeam), wolves, and Rosalia longicorn (Rosalia Alpina) – a beetle at risk of extinction.
